First things, first: what is Obamacare?
“Obamacare” is a nickname for the healthcare law known as PPACA of 2010. The law is often called the Affordable Care Act (ACA) too. And, it also includes ACA Open Enrollment.
It aims to reduce healthcare spending and give more you access to both public and private health plans. These plans are regulated to make them more available. Affordable and higher quality.
Consumer protections, regulations, subsidies, taxes, and insurance exchanges are all a part of Obamacare.
Obamacare offers some benefits, rights, and protections about healthcare. By this law, you may benefit:
- Young adults are able to stay on their parent’s plan until 26 years old;
- People have the right to a rapid appeal of insurance company decisions;
- It expands coverage to tens of millions by subsidizing health insurance costs.
And for health insurance companies, protects their customers by:
- Stopping insurance companies from denying you coverage;
- Preventing them to charge you more based on health status;
- Not letting them drop you when you are sick or if you made an honest mistake on your application;
- Stopping them from imposing unjustified rate hikes.
- Requiring all insurers to cover people with pre-existing conditions;
- Ensuring all plans cover minimum benefits. Free preventive care, free birth control, and coverage for emergency room visits are some benefits offered.
What is ACA open enrollment, and when does it happen?
An ACA open enrollment period is a time that happens once a year. This time is usually in the fall. That’s when you can sign up for health insurance, and adjust or cancel your plan.
It’s usually limited to a few weeks. If you miss it, you may have to wait until the next open enrollment period to make any changes.
You’ll have more time to shop for 2023 health coverage with an extended ACA open enrollment period. It begins on November 1, 2022, and ends January 15, 2023, in Florida.
Yet, enrollments need to be completed by December 15, 2022, to have coverage begin on January 1, 2023. Enrollments completed between December 16 and January 15 will have coverage starting February 1, 2023.
Why should you shop for coverage during ACA open enrollment?
The main reason it’s that health coverage helps protect you from both health and financial risks. No one plans to get hurt or to be sick, but most people need medical care at some point. Health insurance can help cover these costs.
During the ACA Open Enrollment Period, plans are more affordable than ever.
With health insurance, you have access to free preventive care. It includes vaccines, screenings, and some check-ups, even before you meet your deductible.
What should you know about Obamacare subsidies for 2023?
During the COVID-19 pandemic, there was a “COVID-19 Relief Bill” signed into law.
The primary result of this law was larger subsidies for individuals between 100—400% of the federal poverty line (FPL). The households between 100 – 150% FPL are eligible for a $0 premium silver plan. And those above 400% FPL got cost-sharing reductions and expanded subsidy eligibility.
Due to the enhanced subsidies, more people are covered now through the Marketplace than in any year since it began. By the end of 2022 ACA Open Enrollment Period, 14.5 million people had selected a plan (compared to 12 million at the end of the previous year).
But these enhanced subsidies are only temporary. If Congress does not pass extra legislation, we will return to the pre-Relief Bill subsidies. And health plans for this upcoming coverage will have higher, possibly unaffordable, prices.
For example, a single person with an income of $18,000 is currently eligible for a free silver plan. Without ARPA subsidies, they would have to pay an average of $52 a month for the same coverage. The same applies to a household of 4 with an income of $60,000 that would see their premiums increase from an average of $152 a month to $373.
What information do I need to provide for a 2022 ACA health insurance plan?
You need to have this information on hand for each person to be enrolled during ACA Open Enrollment in ACA health insurance:
- Full name;
- Email address;
- Home address;
- Social security number;
- Date of birth;
- Proof of legal residency status;
- Family size and yearly income (to apply for subsidized premium or sharing reductions). A variety of documents can be used to test your income, including pay stubs, W2 forms, most recent tax return, etc.
- Coverage and premium details for any employer-sponsored plan that is available to your family. Regardless of whether you are enrolled in that plan or declining.
- Payment information that the insurer may use to collect your premiums.
- A list of medications that a person is taking and any preexisting conditions. Each insurance policy has its own covered list of drugs. You’ll want to see which of the drugs you need most the plan covers.
